Two years ago, Latrobe standout basketball player Reed Fenton committed to Lehigh. Now, as a sophomore, Fenton has become an integral player starting 27 of 32 games for the Mountain Hawks.
Current Wildcats senior Tucker Knupp is hoping to follow in Fenton's footsteps, albeit in another sport, as the linebacker committed to Lehigh to play football in February.
“It was my only division one offer,” Knupp explained. “The coaches were energetic during our talks. The academic reputation of Lehigh’s engineering program played a big part as well.”
With the recent one year anniversary of the pandemic, let’s take your mind back to pre-covid high school football. With the upcoming 2020 season in limbo and colleges gaining players back with added eligibility, Knupp had a lot on his mind headed into his senior year.
“I was very worried,” Knupp revealed. “A lot of things were canceled over the summer. With that and the season being shortened, the recruiting process became very nerve racking throughout the year.”
If Knupp was nervous during the season, perhaps he should be more often. The 6-foot, 230 pounder collected 52 tackles, seven for a loss, and three sacks in just seven games.
“I was able to workout at home and our coaches were able to put together a conditioning program,” Knupp said. “My family has been a huge help. They helped me with deciding everything.”
The two-time All-State selection becomes yet another Western PA Division I product.
“Being a part of how many great players have come out of the WPIAL is really cool. I still have to improve in a lot of ways. The game speed at the next level is going to be so much faster. I’m definitely looking to get faster.”
Knupp plans to major in Materials Science and Engineering at Lehigh.
